Such levels can threaten the health of children, seniors and individuals with heart or lung problems should stay indoors.

Meanwhile Independent air quality analysis system PamAir also recorded pollution in many other localities in the northern and northern central regions of Vietnam such as Thai Nguyen, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh provinces with the index of 100-150.

Experts forecasted that pollution could ravage northern and northern central localities until January 17 when another cold spell hit them.

Deputy Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast Hoang Phuc Lam said that temperature inversion is one of the factors causing poor air quality in recent days. It means that dust is trapped near the ground when the air cannot rise.

Dr Hoang Duong Tung, Chairman of the Vietnam Clean Air Network, sees exhaust fumes from vehicles, industrial production activities and dust from on-going construction sites as the major cause of the problem.

The Ministry of Health warned that Vietnam should not go out for exercise in the early morning or at night to avoid air pollution. People also should not open doors at this time and not do morning exercises. Masks should be used when going out.
