Authorities in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum have requested the suspension of small-scale hydropower projects which would badly affect the environment.

Under the instruction of the provincial people’s committee, hydropower plant projects which have been planned but have not yet built need to be suspended. Only when meeting requirements not to affect the environment and life of people, they can be implemented.

Many hydropower projects would increase the likelihood of landslides in the central highlands region.

The Department of Planning and Investment has been assigned to work with the Department of Industry and Trade and related agencies to assess the projects.

Projects which have been approved and are safe for the environment also have to be tightly supervised for the implementation steps to ensure that they conform to regulations. In cases detecting their violation, concerned agencies have to report this to the provincial people’s committee.

The province has also considered removing ineffective project and those that encroach on the natural forests.

Earlier, people in Hieu Duc Commune in Kon PLong District strongly opposed Dak Re Hydropower project due to its effects on their agricultural production. Due to the project, nearly 12 hectares of rice in the commune were damaged. The project has also increased the likelihood of landslides in the locality.
