Vietnam expects mild summer

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the La Nina phenomenon will last until April and May and become milder in the autumn. This year summer will be much more pleasant than last year.

In June and July, tropical depressions and hurricanes will start to appear on the sea and will affect the northern and the north-central coast in August and September. The heatwaves will also be milder compared to 2019 and 2020. The temperatures in the north and northern central coastal region will be 0.5-1 degree lower than in the previous years.

However, the authorities should look out for dangerous weather like hail and storms during the transitional period from April to June. Drought is predicted for Nghe An, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and the Central Highlands in April. The situation will worsen and spread to other provinces in the central region.

Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta is braced for increased saltwater intrusion. Whether the situation will get better in May or not will depend on the water from the upstream of the Mekong River and tides.

Southern provinces were also advised to monitor the situation and have plans to deal with droughts and saltwater intrusion.
