Non-governmental organisations plea for action on wild bird protection

The Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment announced that 18 international and domestic non-governmental organisations have signed in a letter sent to the PM to adopt policies intended to protect wild birds.

According to the letter, the poaching, trading and eating of wild birds may create more pandemic outbreaks, threatening public health. Statistics from the World Health Organisation also proved that 70% of new contagious diseases originated from animals, mostly wild animals.

Wildlife poaching also destroys Vietnam's biodiversity as many species have been pushed to the edge of extinction. Poaching is also a problem in natural reserves and national parks like Xuan Thuy National Park and the Mekong Delta. The majority of birds were sold and consumed at the Chim To Dan chain restaurants. It also worsens Vietnam's image as Vietnam has signed up to international conventions and commitments to wild bird protection.

Eleven bird species in Vietnam are listed as critically endangered, 19 species are endangered and 27 are vulnerable. If measures are not applied, Vietnam will be listed as a hotspot for wild, migratory birds in danger of extinction due to poaching and trade.

The organisations asked the PM to promote and tighten monitoring over the implementation of Directive 29 about urgent measures in wildlife protection. Local authorities should praise and punish units based on their work. In addition, advertisements and trading for traps as well as the trading and consumption of wild birds should be banned. Vietnam should a national plan for wild bird protection.

Vietnam Environment Administration agreed that this is an urgent problem that needs to be dealt with as Vietnam is considered a country with high levels of biodiversity.
