Two firms in Bac Ninh Province's Phong Khe Ward have been fined nearly VND1bn (USD43,200) for violating environmental standards.

Wastewater discharged into the streets

Phat Dat Paper Company was fined VND476m (USD20,500), while the Van Nang Company was fined VND500m. The wastewater exceeded the standards for discharged wastewater by 10 times. Both companies also did not have certificates of completion of environmental protection constructions.

The companies were suspended for four months and ordered to fix the problems in 90 days.

In April, after being banned from discharging into the rivers, the paper mills in Phong Khe discharged wastewater directly into the streets. Students at Phong Khe Primary School were unable to go to school because the streets, school and headquarters of Phong Khe People's Committee were flooded.

From April 29 until now, Bac Ninh authorities have fined 20 firms for environmental violations and collected nearly VND8bn (USD345,600).

Vuong Quoc Tuan, vice chairman of Bac Ninh People's Committee, said they were determined to stop environmental violations in Phong Khe Ward. Discharge systems that fail to meet the requirements will be removed. The local police were also asked to carry out more inspections.

The authorities will review the paper mills in Phong Khe Ward and suspend any mill that does not have a waste treatment system.

Phong Khe Ward has nearly 250 paper mills and companies. The industry discharged 10,000 cubic metres of water a day while the waste treatment plant can only deal with 3,000 cubic metres a day.
