Hanoi People's Committee Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh has requested an investigation into the slow salary payment for environmental workers.

Rubbish piling up as environment workers strike against slow payment in Hanoi

The order came after it was reported by the media that the wages of over 200 environmental workers at Nam Hanoi Group, previously called Minh Quan Hi-tech Development and Investment Company, remained unpaid.

The Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs was asked to work with Nam Tu Liem District authorities to verify the information and deal with violators to protect the workers. They must report back by June 30.

According to the Hanoi Department of Construction, from 2017 to 2020, Minh Quan Company won the bid for urban sanitation management in many districts including Tay Ho, Nam Tu Liem, My Duc, Thach That, Me Linh, Ha Dong and Thanh Tri districts. The company also won the bid for sanitation management in Ba Vi District from 2016 to 2020.

During this period, the workers held frequent protests against slow payment of wages and backlog in unpaid wages. As the result, rubbish piled up along the streets. In late 2020, the company didn't win any bids for 2021 and changed its name from Minh Quan Hi-tech Development and Investment Company to Nam Hanoi Group.

Hanoi People's Committee already asked related agencies such as the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to urge district authorities to deal with the growing rubbish. However, the situation with the Nam Hanoi Group or Minh Quan Company didn’t improve.
