A beach in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue is facing the threat of pollution as erosion is revealing a large dumpsite.

The dump was located in a protective forest near a beach in Phu Thuan Commune, Phu Vang District some 10 years ago when local residents just dumped their household waste at the location. Local authorities then buried the waste and banned dumping activities.

However, the waste has been exposed as erosion has affected the beach in recent years. Some waste has been washed away to sea due to rising tides.

According to party secretary of Phu Thuan District People's Committee, Dang Tien Tuy, the site developed between 2007 and 2010 on an area of 300 square metres and lies some 300 metres from the beach.

"The dumping site was closed in 2010 when we started to collect household waste for treatment," the official said. "We had buried the waste but erosion has exposed the site."

Commenting on the problem, Phu Vang District Department of Natural Resources and Environment said that they were planning to remove all the waste at the dump within this year.
