A big green sea turtle has been released into the wild after being caught by a fisherman in the central province of Quang Tri.

According to Colonel Nguyen Van Anh from Cua Viet Border Post, at around 6 o’clock this morning, November 29, fisherman Nguyen Van Duc, 50, from Thuy Ban Village in Gio Linh District informed local authorities that a turtle had been entangled in his net.

The turtle has been released to the wild

Duc said that while fishing in an area some five nautical miles from the shore, he caught the turtle which is some 80cm wide and 85cm long and 70 kilos.

On the same day, the turtle was freed thanks to the Cua Viet Border Post and the Con Co Island Marine Reserve.

The green sea turtle is among five turtle species facing the risk of extinction in Vietnam.

So far this year, Con Co Island Marine Reserve has released five green sea turtles into the wild.
