Vietnam plans to hold its disaster mitigation drill for tsunamis in the central coastal city of Danang on September 1.

Major-General Pham Hoai Giang, Chief of National Committee for Search and Rescue’s Secretariat said on April 14 that after the practice in Danang, the same activity may be organised in other locations with possible risks of tsunami occurrence.

“We should focus on preparedness instead of just making temporary solutions. There might a tsunami strike Danang within two hours of a nearby earthquake,” Giang noted.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, an 8.3-magnitude earthquake in Manila Bay, in the Philippines, could provoke a tsunami 6.2-metres in height in Quang Ngai Province and 2.1-metres in the city of Nha Trang.

A 9.2-magnitude quake in the same location of the Philippines may result in a tsunami reaching heights of 10.6 metres in Quang Ngai, and 5 metres in Nha Trang.

The installation of 10 tsunami warning stations in vulnerable locations is being sped up in Vietnam. The station in Danang has already been installed.

After the March 11 earthquake in Japan, aftershocks have been recorded in other Asian countries, such as Myanmar, Taiwan and the Philippines. The March 24 aftershock in Myanmar was recorded at 7 on the Richter scale, and could be felt in Hanoi.
