According to the municipal Red Cross, the volunteers not only included the elderly, but also young people and students and six who pledged to donate their entire body or some organs.

To date, the city has set up five cornea donor clubs. The city’s population blood donor rate also stands at 2.28% compared to national average of just 0.75%.

Vietnam now has over 300,000 people who are blind due to cornea-related diseases. Since 1985 until the end of 2010, the country conducted just 1,500 cornea transplant operations. A number of patients have had to wait for surgery for decades due to the serious shortage.

The Eye Bank under the Vietnam Institution of Ophthalmology came into operation in March 2010. This is the first eye and tissue bank in the country after the Law on Organ and Tissue Transplant and Donation took effect on July 1, 2007.
