The Hanoi Department of Information and Communication last Wednesday presented 200 books and 100 DVDs related to Agent Orange (AO) to the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA).

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Do Quy Doan and Lieutenant General Nguyen The Luc, Vice President of VAVA, were present at the ceremony.

The gifts, including books entitled Nua the ky mot noi dau (Half a century, one pain), and the movie Chat doc da cam, noi dau con do (Agent Orange, the pain remained), feature stories of AO victims who overcome difficulties and adapt to life, and are meant to join in one voice with the victims and international friends in their struggle for justice.

This is one of several initiatives by locals, businesses, governmental organizations and ministries to show concern and give support to AO victims.

In Vietnam, about 4.8 million people were reportedly exposed to AO during the Vietnam War before 1975, resulting in around 400,000 people being killed or maimed, and 500,000 children who were born with birth defects.

Women exposed to the chemical had higher rates of miscarriage and stillbirths, as did livestock such as cattle, water buffalo, and pigs.

When in human bodies, AO will weaken the immune system, making victims prone to various diseases, including cancer.
