Over 70,000 children in HCM City are living in underprivileged conditions or are on the verge of falling into poverty, according to a new report.

Thousands of children in HCM City living in underprivileged conditions

Statistics by HCM City People’s Committee showed that the figure accounted for 6.16% of the city’s children.

Many families are still unaware of their responsibility to protect and take care of as well as facilitate their children’s education.

Some parents have even beaten their children or forced them to work under burdensome conditions.

In recent years, the rate of crimes among young people, especially children, is on the rise. The rate of child injuries has been also increasing year after year.

The situation is blamed on poor communication on the issue as well as lack of coordination among ministries and branches related to child care and protection.

In order to improve the situation, Hua Ngoc Thuan, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee said they have earmarked June as an action month for children.

They aim to create a friendly environment to facilitate the equal chances for development of poor and underprivileged and ethnic minority children. Other goals are to mitigate child injuries, child crimes and child abuse.

The municipal government has called on individuals and organisations to initiate activities and programmes to provide support to such children via gift and scholarship donations, health insurance cards, picnics and camping activities.
