Sy struggling with fatal diseases

In addition to cataracts, he is suffering from cerebral palsy, inborn Rubella and heart disease. Due to his economic and social situation, however, he has little chance of receiving comprehensive treatment.

Sy is the only child of a couple from Yen Giang Hamlet, Loc Ha District. His parents were born in poor families and had few opportunities for education. They were married in 2010, and gave birth to their son the following October.

Learning of all the difficulties their son faced, the family was at a loss for how to deal with his treatment. In addition to the problems with understanding the seriousness of their son's multiple illnesses, they have had trouble finding the money to treat him.

The parents were forced to borrow nearly VND100 million (USD4,769) from banks and sympathetic neighbours. But eventually they ran out of money for Sy's healthcare, leaving him in a deteriorating condition. He has been in the hospital for ten months.

His parents decided to take him to the Ha Tinh General Hospital in early May, where his condition worsened, leaving the parents helpless, as they did not have money to pay for more treatment.

“There were many nights when my son would wake up in spasms of pain. He would wheeze and writhe in pain, his face turning purple. It broke our hearts to see this and not being able to do anything to help," Sy’s mother, Nguyen Thi Hien, said.

Doctor Nguyen Tri Quy, Head of the Pediatrics Ward at Ha Tinh General Hospital said, “Now Sy is suffering from heart disease, cataracts, pneumonia, cerebral palsy and rickets. Because of the critical condition of the child, he was admitted to the hospital, but this family is in desperate need of financial assistance in order for him to receive full treatment."
