A six year old boy is begging daily for food for his mother and younger brother who is receiving treatment at Dong Nai Paediatrics Hospital.

Everyday, Tuan brings the plastic box to the pagoda to get the food

The boy, Nguyen Minh Tuan, is the son of Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi from Xuan Loc District, Dong Nai Province.

Two weeks ago, Mrs. Nhi had to take her second son, three-month old Nguyen Minh Tu to hospital for malnutrition and pneumonia. However, she cannot afford to cover the hospital and treatment fees or daily meals, therefore she and two children have to depend on the assistance of doctors and patients in the hospital.

Mrs. Nhi said she tried to check out her children from the hospital because she could not afford the hospital fees, but, two days after returning home, her son’s health worsened, so she brought him back.

Nhi’s father died since when she was small and her family are very poor and she never had the chance to go to school. When she grew up, she had to trade scrap-iron to earn money to take care of her mother. She got married to a bricklayer and they had three children. Nevertheless, because of the very difficult economic conditions, her husband left the family along with her oldest son.

The family have had to beg for food since being at the hospital. “When I’m busy and can’t go out, Tuan brings the plastic box to the pagoda to get the food. Sometimes when the pagoda runs out he has to visit households near the hospital to ask for the food. In the afternoon, he often tries to beg for more food for breakfast of the next day,” she said.

The six-year boy has never gone to school and he looks thinner than he should for his age. His dream is that his family can have enough food and his younger brother can return home.

Doctor Nguyen Thanh Quyen, Deputy Head of the Infection Faculty of the Dong Nai Pediatrics Hospital, said, “Tu is in very bad health. The treatment has cost VND15 million (USD714.2) and Mrs. Nhi is unable to afford it, and the costs are likely to rise.”

Doctor Le Canh Nam grants Dantri’s donation to Mrs. Nhi
