Lam Thi Phuong Anh, a six-year-old underprivileged girl from HCM City’s slum area, is struggling with hydronephrosis level 3 that prevents her from controlling urination.

Anh compelled to sit on pile of rags as she has no diapers

Apart from fatal kidney problems, Anh is also paralysed. As her family is still struggling to earn a living, they can’t afford to buy her any diapers, forcing her to sit on a pile of rags.

Now Anh is living with her family in in a rented house in So Thung Hamlet, a slum area in Binh Thanh District.

Her family is facing a lot of economic difficulties as they are living on modest incomes of a waste collector and a guard, forcing Anh’s older sister and brother to work at early ages to earn money.

Due to their difficult conditions, they rarely take Anh to hospital for medical checkups. The last time she visited doctors was in April.

While being too busy earning money for their daily life, Anh’s parents seem to have little time caring for her let alone understanding the exact cause of her disease.

“Just after she was born Anh had to undergo a surgery to remove a tumour on her waist. They told us that further surgery would be needed in the future to remove screws in her spine which would allow her to regain use of her legs," the mother recalled. However the family could not afford these treatments, leaving her partially paralyzed.

Her medical treatment is limited to that for fever and diarrhoea.
