Nguyen Thi Khanh Linh is struggling with heart disease

Linh is the second child of a poor family in Hamlet 8 of Lien Thanh Commune. She was sent to the E Hospital in Hanoi when she was just five months old.

“Like her sister and brother, Linh suffered from heart disease since birth. Our first child who is five years old is still living with heart disease while our second baby died of the disease when she was just three months old,” said Nguyen Thi Nhat, the baby’s mother.

The parents obviously cannot stand seeing their baby ill without good medical treatment, so the couple decided to try all means to come up with funds for Linh’s surgery. In addition to borrowing from their neighbours, using their land use right certificate as collateral for loans, they have borrowed on high interest rates.

“We’ll try to save our baby at all costs,” Linh’s father Nguyen The Sen said.

According to the hospital, Khanh Linh’s situation is rather complicated and needed urgent surgery which cost VND100 million (USD4,753), but her family has only raised half that much.

Over the past 40 days, the couple has spent all they had on Linh’s treatment. Now they are living on instant noodles or meals donated by others. Sometimes, they have nothing to eat while they worry about their daughter waiting in the recovery room.

“Doctors said among seven recent heart surgeries, my baby’s case was the most serious. We can do nothing now but pray to the God,” Sen said.
