All three members of poor family struggling with illnesses

A poor family in Hung Yen province is in a very difficult situation. There's a disabled father, a mother with a neurological disorder and a daughter suffering from Wilson's disease.

Wilson's disease makes Huong's limbs curled up

That is the case of Nguyen Anh Quan and Nguyen Thi Luyen in Khoai Chau District's Xuan Dinh Village, who are doing their best to take care of their daughter Nguyen Thi Thu Huong.

A few years ago, Quan suffered a traumatic brain injury after a car accident. When his family thought he could not make it, he woke up, deaf in his left ear and with his left arm paralysed. Quan also has great difficulty in walking.

 Huong's limbs curled up

Bad luck continued to cause more miseries for the poor family when Luyen was diagnosed with autonomic nervous system disorders and a chronic neurological disorder. For a long time, Luyen had to lay still. She was able to walk around again after relatives donated money for a traditional treatment. Luyen currently is the main working force though she often faints when the weather is bad.

That's why their daughter's disease came as a huge shock to everyone.

Her skin has peeled off

"We didn't know that she had a disease. She just sat in one place so I scolded her and told her to help her parents but she just sat there and did nothing. Doctors at Khoai Chau District Hospital said we should bring her to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi where she was diagnosed with Wilson's disease." Huong's grandfather said.

Wilson's disease is an inherited disorder in which excessive amounts of copper accumulate in the body, particularly in the liver, brain, and eyes. This rare disorder, which affects 1 in 30,000 individuals, has taken away Huong's voice and made her limbs curl up. With two ill parents and a poor family, Huong was quickly discharged.

Quan takes care of all housework with a paralysed arm

Luyen's job is washing dishes so her husband has to take care of the housework and their daughter. "My injuries hurt but even my ill wife is working and my daughter is seriously ill. I feel ashamed because I can't help them much." he said. "I'll do everything I can to cure my daughter's disease."
