A baby in Ha Tinh Province is now nearly a year old but weighs only four kilos as she was born prematurely suffering from serious malnutrition and inborn cardiovascular disease.

The baby is seriously malnourished

Nguyen Yen Nhi is the only child of a single mother, Nguyen Thi Hoa, who is living in Kenh Hamlet, Cam Xuyen District’s Cam Thanh Commune.

Hoa, prematurely gave birth to Nhi at the age of 40, when the foetus was only seven months old.

“Despite being a single woman I decided to have the baby, hoping that my child would be a friend in my life and would take care of me when I got old. I was eager for the birth, but I was greatly shocked when doctors at Ha Tinh General Hospital told me that they must induce the birth of the baby as soon as possible in order to save my life, which was in danger due to abnormally high amounts of amniotic fluid," Hoa said. The foetus was just seven months old at the time.

Looking for help elsewhere, Hoa travelled to the Hanoi-based Central Obstetrics Hospital, for further health checkups, but unfortunately doctors there said the same things.

She was compelled to go to the local hospital for surgery to remove the baby without any hope that the child might survive.

She cries all night to resist the pain due to heart disease

Magically, the child, weighing 1.8 kilos, survived and was placed in an incubator for many days, raising the woman’s hopes that her daughter would grow like other children.

However, the ill-fated woman faced another emotional setback when she found out that her baby suffered from inborn heart-disease and can only survive if several additional surgeries are performed

The mother feels helpless

This is a great challenge for Hoa and her daughter as they don’t have a house to live in, but stay with Hoa’s younger sister’s family. How to raise money for these additional surgeries is another question that must be faced.

Now the baby is suffering constant pain and respiratory problems. She also finds it hard to eat anything, including powdered milk. Crying is the only method the child knows for fighting the pain.

“Recently, I can’t and don’t want to sleep. I stay up late just holding my baby for fear that she might not make it through the night,” the mother added.
