Three brothers take care of mother

That is the case of Duong Thi Luot from Tan Ninh Village, Le Thuy District. Because of her poor situation, Luot rarely goes to hospital. After suffering from a high fever in 2010, Luot went to hospital only to find out that she has squamous cell carcinoma, a type of paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer. The cancer has already spread to other body parts such as ears and lungs. Her husband quickly left for another woman.

"I felt dread when doctor said I was in final stage of cancer. I'm in need of radiation treatment but the cost for each session runs into the millions of VND. I'm not scared to die, but i fear for my children's future. I hope someone will help them," she said. 

The youngest child also has to do housework

In 2011, Luot was unable to move around much when the tumour in her face grew bigger and then she had to ask her sister to help with housework. Her brothers and sisters borrowed money anywhere they could to bring Luot to Hue Central Hospital but the money only lasted for two months.

In 2013, with another debt, Luot spent four months and VND30 million (USD1,400) at hospital but her condition did not improve. She had to go home yet again even though she still needs a surgery.

"I'm so desperate, but my children told me that I should stay strong because they'll stay beside me. They're willing to drop out of school to find jobs. I can only cry." Luot said.

Her first child Le Xuan Dung, who was in 10th grade, and her second child Le Xuan Hoang in 7th grade, skipped classes to catch small fish and crabs in the fields for VND20-30,000 a day. Dung was only able to finish 12th grade with strong support from teachers. The third child Le Xuan Hoa is in 6th grade but he is already struggling.

Meals consist rice with vegetables in their garden

Dung stopped his studies and took work doing extra jobs at construction sites. "If my mother's health is better, I'll go to some vocational school so I can find better jobs. I love my mother but I don't know what to do." Dung said.

Duong Thi Dieu, Lout's sister said, "My parents died early so all of us had to struggle through life. We don't have money for Luot's treatment, we can only help a little with school supplies for our nephew. Since my sister felt ill, I have had to ask for help from their school many times so my nephews wouldn't abandon their studies."

Hoa said, "I want my mother to be cured. She loves us most of all because father has already abandoned us."
