The life of a blind, single mother in Hung Yen Province seems to be hopeless as she can’t find any financial resources to treat her little son who is plagued by several diseases.

Blind mother always wants to care for her baby

The 10-month-old baby of Dang Thi Xinh, a poor single mother from Tong Tran Commune’s Vong Phan Village, is under treatment at the central Paediatric Hospital, suffering from respiratory distress and malnutrition.

The baby has recently been diagnosed with Down's syndrome and congenital heart disease as well.

The mother was born into a poor family and grew up blind from the age of four. She also lacked proper care as her parents died at early ages.

Xinh’s older sister Dang Thi Thin said, “Xinh contracted blindness as a result of our poor life. She suffered from red sore eyes when she was four, but we neither had money nor knew how to treat the disease properly. Xinh was just given a poultice with some herbal medicine but it didn’t help.”

When Thin got married, Xinh lived on in the house alone She wanted a baby, hoping that might change her life.

“Even though I’m aware I may hardly have a chance to get married, I still longed for a baby and my dream came true when I became pregnant. Being pregnant was the happiest time of my life. I hoped that my child would act as my “eyes”. I couldn’t foresee such a terrible situation,” Xinh said.

Little baby suffering from several diseases

Xinh named her boy Dang Xuan Thuong, meaning “Spring of Love” but the reality was much different.

Hoang Thi Thu Hang, doctor at the Central Paediatric Hospital said, “Xuan Thuong suffers from serious pneumonia and malnutrition and we’ve recently detected Down's syndrome and congenital heart disease. We’re conducting more tests before deciding the best treatment.”

Poor mother and child are granted meals daily at hospital

According to Dr. Hang, Xuan Thuong’s family is desperately poor, so the hospital provides them with daily meals and VND1 million (USD47.4) for milk for the ill-fated baby.

“Some people told me to send my son to an orphanage but I can’t stand living without him,” the mother said.
