A poor family in Binh Dinh Province is calling for financial help to treat their 20-year-old son who has been suffering from cerebral palsy since birth.

That is the case of Ho Xuan Anh in Loc Khanh Village, Phu Cat District. Anh is currently staying at Binh Dinh General Hospital. 

His father Ho Xuan Hoi said, "He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. We thought his body would be normal, with only his mind staying stunted. But he is paralysed. It hurts so bad to see him foam at the mouth when he has his seizures."

Hoi was born to a poor farming family, so he had to drop out of school early to find job. After completing his military duty, he married and had three kids. 

Anh is Hoi's first child but he has been severely disabled his whole life. Moreover, he was never been to a hospital because of the family's poverty. His family uses the medical insurance to buy some cheap medicines with hope that it may ease the pain. 

Anh's health is weak after surgery

When Anh was unable to eat, his belly swelled and his breathing became hard, the family then hurried him to hospital where he was diagnosed with intestinal volvulus. The doctors said they needed to perform surgery in order to save Anh's life.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Kha from Department of General Surgery in Binh Dinh General Hospital said, "We carried out a surgery to fix the twisted intestines. However, because Anh had cerebral palsy, he was still very weak and the family could not afford further treatment."

In order to pay hospital fees, Anh's family borrowed money everywhere and only have two rice fields left. Not only do they have to take care of a five-member family and pay for medicine for Anh, but they also need to support their second child, who is studying at Saigon Technology College, which costs VND2.5 million (USD120) each month.

Sympathising with their situation, the doctors asked hospital administrators to allow Anh stay in hospital for free and called for help from kind people.

Hoi said, "We can only do odd jobs here and there to earn some money to prolong Anh's life. It's hard to live with his illness but he's still my son."
