Hoping for a miracle

Pham Dang Khoa nurtured an ambition that he would study well to get a good job and one day support his mother and sister. Unfortunately, a potentially fatal disease may take that dream away.

Once a strong and active student, Khoa now can hardly move

Without a father, Khoa and his mother and sister take care of each other. His mother suffers from hypertension and often faints but she still goes to work.

Khoa’s sister, who is 4 years older than him, went to work when she was in the 9th grade. After receiving a high school diploma, she works even harder to earn more money in order to support the whole family and buy medicine for her mother.

The mother and sister of Khoa give all their love, trust and hope to him. His future and his life are their future and their life. His passing university entrance exams brought great joy and hope to his mother and sister and seemed like a reward for the hardship and sacrifices of the family. Khoa gave all of his effort to study and learn. Khoa's wish was to take care of his mother and sister.

Unexpectedly, Khoa discovered that he had a life-threatening disease. Khoa has been diagnosed with acute Leukaemia, a type of blood cancer. It was already difficult for his mother and sister to make enough money for his food and schooling fees, so having money for his treatment was beyond their ability and Khoa had tried to cope with the disease. Eventually, he started suffering from fevers. Two months ago, he had a severe fever, became dizzy and fainted.

His life is in danger because he could not access timely treatment in the past. His sister became so worried that she secretly borrowed money to get Khoa treated.

After being admitted to the hospital for one month, Khoa's his sister ran out of all money. Finally, she decided to tell Khoa the truth and took him home. She cannot stand seeing her brother's health gradually declining. “When I see him sitting alone thoughtfully, I feel helpless. I know Khoa really wants to live because he’s so young. He has many dreams,” she shared.

Recently, Khoa had another severe fever and the disease has become complicated. Many organs such as his kidneys, heart, spleen, eyes and ears have been damaged.

Doctors said that a bone-marrow transplant could save him but the success rate would is only 30%. In addition, his family is too needy so it’s very difficult to find a suitable marrow donor. The second option is chemotherapy but it’s very costly.

The situation of Khoa is extremely critical. He needs chemotherapy immediately, which is about VND70 million ($3,684). Khoa’s family cannot afford that much money and plans to take him home because they have no other choice.

While his friends are busy with exams and enjoying summer holiday, Khoa is struggling each minute to survive. As his sister cried she said, “Will a miracle come to him? I can only can pray for him and wish for a miracle.”
