Life for one poor family in central Ha Tinh has become destitute after their house burned down, leaving all burdens on the wife's shoulders.

Desperate family

Nguyen Thi Hoi, from Hamlet 4, Phu Phong Commune in Huong Khe District, is straightening out her life and earn a living to raise her son who suffers from heart disease, along with an orphaned child and an elderly mother. Her husband abandoned them years ago.

To add to their problems, their house burned down last December, taking all their belongings.

Fire ruins house

“I woke up early in the morning one day and started to prepare breakfast for my son before school. We never found out how the fire started, all I know is that it started when i was in the field. By the time my neighbours noticed, it was too late. I was horrified.,” Hoi said.

She said that, in order to build that house she had to borrow VND20 million (USD946.29) from the Bank for Social Policies. Now they have no clothes and no place live.

Mother trying to treat her son

Hoi got married at the age of 36 and they then had a son named Pham Huy Hoang. Unfortunately, the child suffered from heart disease from birth and became malnourished due to the lack of treatment.

Now the son is in the 11th grade, but remains ill much of the time.

Textbooks burned

Hoi has to work hard to earn money to provide her son with four treatments per year which cost her over VND10 million (USD473.14) each.

They are relying on their modest incomes from farming, also dealing with drought and floods.

Shelter for a poor family

Hoi is also taking care of a child whose parents are relatives that died, along with an 86-year-old mother.
