A 73-year old woman in Thanh Hoa Province is silently working to earn money to feed her 46-year old daughter, who is blind and has a coronary artery obstruction.

For Le Thi Thoi, who lives in Hamlet 5, Tho Cuong Commune, Tet brought nothing special for her and her ill daughter, Trinh Thi Giang. Their house has been deserted and their life has been gloomy since Thoi’s husband died several years ago.

“Even though my daughter is nearly 50 years old, I still have to take care of her as you would be a child. We’ve been facing increasing difficulties after my husband died. I only wish my daughter were healthy,” Thoi said.

She said that her daughter, Giang, became ill in 2006, when she suffered cerebrovascular accident. Giang is also plagued with a coronary artery obstruction.

Despite their economic difficulties, Thoi has tried her best to take her daughter to hospital for treatment. However, doctors said they were unable to cure her and advised the family to take her home.

Thoi used to be able to do farm work, feed her daughter and earn money to buy medicine. Now Thoi cannot work anymore, adding to their difficulties. She cannot do nothing but raise a few chickens to sell.

Thoi’s two sons are married but are unable to help much.

Apart from daily living expenses, Thoi is struggling to buy medicine for her daughter, which costs between VND50,000 and VND60,000 (USD2.36-USD2.83) per day.

Giang is provided with social welfare, about VND360,000 (USD17) per month, but that is not enough. They were forced to sell part of their land to pay for Giang’s medicine.

“I’m very sad and feel like a burden to my mother because I’m blind and can’t do anything without her help,” Giang said.
