A poor high school girl in the central province of Ha Tinh who lost her parents now has to live alone in a dilapidated tent and earn a living to support herself.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong, of Ha Tinh Province, has to tried to do many different jobs in a very difficult situation, but still received good grades. Now, she carries bricks for a local workshop.

Phuong’s farther died in a traffic accident when she was just four years old, leaving her and her mother behind. When Phuong was in the tenth grade her mother became very ill, but could only get limited treatment. Her situation deteriorated and one day she died of a brain haemorrhage.

Phuong now lives alone in a small and dilapidated house on a deserted soil bank. The house has nothing valuable except for a bed and an altar. The walls are covered with rotten planks and the ceiling is covered with pieces of torn cardboard.

"Last year in the rainy season, the house was on the verge of collapse. Living in such a house, I am constantly worried about risks of strong wind and other elements. It's a challenge to earn a living by myself and I can't afford to repair this place," Phuong said.

Phuong lives alone in a dilapidated tent  

Phuong’s uncle and aunt are both very poor, so she cannot ask for their support. Every month, she earns between VND400,000-VND600,000 (USD19-28.6), only enough to get by from day to day and pay school fees.

She often burns incense to her parents to seek their support so that her future can be better.

Mrs. Thuan, who is Phuong’s colleague at the workshop, said “I've never seen such a strong-willed person. She is very kind and hard working.”
