A poor couple in the southern province of Ben Tre is seeking the community's help to save their 10-year-old daughter who is suffering from leukemia.

Tran Van Lanh and Vo Thi Kim Xuyen, from Cho Lach District, have been trying to get loans to take their daughter to the hospital.

Their daughter, Vo Thi My Tram, who is now in the 4th grade, was taken to a local hospital for examination after showing unusual symptoms. She was diagnosed with leukemia two weeks ago. Doctors moved her to HCM City Children’s Hospital No. 1 and then to Ho Chi Minh City Oncological Hospital.

Mr. Lanh had to borrow VND10 million (USD476) for the the treatment but the money ran out within the first two weeks despite the fact his daughter has an insurance card. The house where his family is living now was lent by a relative, so he could not sell it.

He decided to sell his motorbike for VND1.5 million (USD71.4) along with all his valuables.

His neighbours felt pity for the poor family and set up a group to call for donations. Nonetheless, the donations was very modest, around VND10 million (USD476).

Local authorities also cooperated in support of the family and donating an additional VND20 million (USD952.3). But the treatment will require hundreds of millions of VND, said Nguyen Van Thanh, Vice Chairman of Long Thoi Commune’s Red Cross.

In spite of her struggle, Tram has managed to keep up her grades and received certificates of merit. The parents now feel completely helpless to save their daughter.
