A poor woman from Ha Tinh Province is in desperate need of financial support to treat her serious kidney disease.

Over the past 30 years, illness has plagued the family of Le Thi Hung. They live in Nam Moi Village, Nghi Xuan District. Hung is the youngest of two sisters. Her father died during the American War, her mother and two sisters have been making conical hats for a living.

Hung's mother and sister became suddenly ill, both diagnosed with cancer. The family has had to live on the small amount of allowance for soldiers' families. Unable to afford medical treatment, they have relied on painkillers over the years. Having tried everything to support the family, Hung herself fell ill. Despite several marriage proposals that might have take her out of the situation, she decided not to abandon her family.

In 2005, her family was granted social housing, but her mother and sister died soon after. Two years ago, neighbors forced Hung to go to the hospital after experiencing abdominal pains. The doctors at Viet-Duc Hospital diagnosed her with gallstones and kidney problems.

However, since her mother died, their allowance has been cut significantly. Her relatives borrowed money for Hung's first surgery, a kidney removal. They also removed her gallbadder and a quarter of her liver. Without additional funds, she was transferred to Ha Tinh Sanatorium, where doctors allowed her to stay for free after learning of her situation.

"I depend on the nurses for everything. I'm sad when I see other patients get visits from their family." said Hung. Her medical treatment is not over, as she is still in need of several procedures but lacks the funds to pay for them as her debts mount. She is not thinking of selling her house.
