A homeless woman was found by local residents near Long Bien Market after she fell, and was taken to hospital for treatment without money or relatives to support her.

The woman is named Be and is undergoing treatment at Thanh Nha Hospital. She had been taking shelter underneath Long Bien Bridge for years, earning small change for doing odd jobs.

Nguyen Thi Le My, a doctor at Thanh Nhan hospital, said, “On August 19, Be collapsed on the street with only VND10,000 in pocket. Residents living nearby the Long Bien market collected a little over VND1 million to get her admitted to hospital. She was diagnosed with peritonitis as a result of a hole in her small intestine. Her situation was so critical that doctors decided to conduct emergency surgery to save her life.”

Hard surgery

According to My, after a second surgery, the woman condition has got worse and she needs special care, which are expected to cost as VND5 million per day. So far her treatment has already cost over VND500 million, but she has no way to pay.

"I just remember having a really bad stomach ache on that day and I must have fainted. When I woke up I was in the hospital,” said Be.

Hoping to reunite with family after recovery

She said she does not know what her real name is, but others call her Be. She could not remember exactly where her hometown was. She thinks that it was either Quang Binh or Quang Tri Province. She says she got lost as a little girl in wartime and has not seen her family since. She is about 50 years old.

“I have a great desire to meet my relatives at least the last time before passing,” the woman said.
