A little blind boy who lives with his family in a tent near a forest in Phu Tho Province is in desperate need of financial support to save his sight.

Vu Huy Thiep, 6, lives his parents and a younger brother in a tent in Dong Luong Commune, Cam Khe District.

He was born without pupils, but despite his blindness Hiep tries his best to help around the house, doing chores such as housework, including cooking, cleaning and washing clothes.

“I wish that one day I was just walking down the street and I could suddenly see. I really want to go to school,” the boy said.

Even though he has been blind since he was born, he has never been taken to the hospital for medical because his family could not afford it.

“We’re struggling to earn a living, so we can’t afford to provide our son with any medical treatment,” said Nga, the boy’s mother.

Mother feels helpless

Vu Huy Cong, the boy’s grandfather, said, “I’m very sad to see our grandchild like this. Sometimes, I wonder if it could be the result of the Agent Orange I was was exposed to during the war. My son suffers from mental problems and my wife recently died of cancer.”

The boy’s mother said poverty forced them to ask her father in law raise their first son. Seven years ago they moved to their current location, close to the forest. The unfortunate family is living on the modest income of the mother, who searches for bamboo shoots in the forest.

Vi Ngoc Bich, chairman of the communal People’s Committee said, “Thiep’s family is in a desperate situation. We’ve provided them with some support, but it really is not enough. We can only hope that generous people can lend a helping hand."
