Abandoned baby cared for by nurses at Bach Mai Hospital 

The couple were found on the morning of February 14. The boy's umbilical chord was still attached. They were taken to the General Hospital of Agriculture.

Doctors believe the mother gave birth at around 8:30pm on February 13. Both were in critical condition, and the baby was sent to Bach Mai Hospital’s pediatrics unit, while the mother was sent to Hanoi Central Obstetrics Hospital.

“The baby sufered serious bacterial contamination but now has recovered,” said Cao Thi Bich Hao, a doctor at the Bach Mai Hospital said.

The mother, who initially identified herself as Nguyen Thi Ngoc, but changed her name to Ho Thi Ngoc when admitted to the Hanoi Central Obstetrics Hospital, has disappeared.

The baby was named Nguyen Van An.

“Three days after the baby was hospitalised, a 58-year-old man came to visit the baby," Hao said. "He identified himself as Hoang Dinh Ha, a motorbike driver and said he was the baby’s father, and that he and the mother came from central Nghe An Province."

After doctors informed him about his baby’s situation he said he had no money and went away and has yet to to return.

The mother, who was discharged from hospital after a day, has not been to Bach Mai Hospital to claim her baby.

Medical staff have for the past 20 days volunteered to care for the child and his weight has risen from 2.7 kg to 4kg.

Nguyen Thanh Nam, a doctor at Bach Mai Hospital, said treatment costs had now reached VND30m.The boy is in good health and, unless a relative or his parents come forward, he will be sent to an orphanage.
