Five children in mountainous Dak Nong Province have become orphans after a storm killed their parents.

H'Hon, 13, said she and two youngest brothers had gone to the cassava fields with their parents when the sky went dark and a strong win blew. Her father called everyone into a wooden shed he hoped would protect them from the storm.

She recalls, "Everyone was afraid because of the strong wind and heavy rain. Our shed titled and collapsed. I fainted. When I woke up, my parents and one of my brothers were lying on the ground, not moving. I held my brother and stayed there. We waited until the storm passed, then went for help."

Her brother's arm was broken, and she carried him for 10km before they found someone.

K'Son, 16, the oldest of the siblings, has been caring for his brothers and sisters since then. The school-aged children have dropped out of class and work to make some money for the others. K'Son earns VND130,000 a day, when he can get work. Their home is sparsely furnished and they sleep on the floor.

Some of the youngest are living with relatives, but they too are poor and it is only a temporary solution.

Le Hong Linh, the chief of police in Dak Nia Commune, said, "Their situation is very difficult. The commune initiated a donation fund and several firms and individuals have donated to helped them overcome the current challenges."
