A mother and her three children in the central province of Ha Tinh have been left destitute after her fisherman husband drowned on a river.

Vo Thi Nhung, 29, who is still recovering from complications giving birth, cannot work and worries how she will care for her children, the youngest born just 10 days before her husband died.

Neighbors help with some food so the family can eat each day, and Nhung goes to the river to catch fish and shrimp to supplement their meager diet, leaving her eldest, a boy aged seven, to care for his sisters.

Nhung said that about a month after their boy was born, in 2007, her husband was in a traffic accident, from which it took him a month of treatment and medical care to recover.

After their second child was born, in 2012, her husband was in another traffic accident, which left him with serious shoulder and leg injuries requiring months of hospital care, which drained their savings and left them hundreds of millions of VND in debt.

In a final blow, her husband fell in the river and drowned.
