An 8-month-old girl is facing death because her family is unable to borrow enough to pay for the surgery that might save her.

Le Thi Bich Loc, of Thanh Hoa Province, a down syndrome baby, was diagnosed at birth with severe heart problems.

"Doctors determined she needed surgery, but we can't borrow enough to pay for it," said Le Ngoc Quy, Loc's father.

Quy said he feels helpless and can't bear to sit by her bedside, instead standing outside her hospital room and watching her.

Vu Thi Lan, from Hanoi Heart Hospital, said, "The doctors are sympathetic, but the hospital's funds are limited so we can't do much. She needs ventilators to breathe and medicines. She needs surgery as soon as possible or she may die."

Loc's mother, Bui Thi Cheo, said, "We don't want charity. We only wish we could find somewhere to borrow money. It'll take us a long time to pay off the debt, but we'll pay it all back."
