Two sisters in Ben Tre Province are trying to find work to help support their ill father and their mother, who is suffering from chronic kidney failure and cirrhosis.

In 2011, Dang Thi Truc Phuong was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure. The family sold their land and borrowed money to save her. However, because she has to go to hospital four times a week for hemodialysis, the money ran out fast. Recently, Phuong was diagnosed with cirrhosis, which makes her stomach swell.

Phuong's husband tries to work as a freelance labourer, but a few months ago, he was diagnosed with inguinal hernia and needs surgery. The family is still in debt and he decided to stay home.

Their two daughters, Nguyen Thi Quynh Huong, born in 2003 and Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhi, born in 2008, peel cashew nuts each day for VND10,000 to help their father. The neighbours are sympathetic and help them with food, but worry the sisters may have to quit school.

Dang Van To, the chairman of the Red Cross Organisation in An Hoa Tay Commune, said, "We are calling for help from kind donors and introduced them to charity groups that came across our commune."

"We are borrowing everywhere for VND1m for the monthly hemodialysis. I wish I can live on to take care of my daughters," Phuong said.
