A single mother in Binh Dinh Province is calling for financial support to save her son who has been paralysed due to serious injuries after a traffic accident three years ago.

Tran Thi Tuyet Mai, 52, of Tuy Phuoc Commune, has been borrowing money to pay for treatment of her son, Nguyen Chi Tam.

She has run up a huge debt and can borrow no more.

Mai said her husband left when their son was four. Her only income is from farm work, but she has sold out all their land for her son’s treatment after he was in a traffic accident in 2012, which left him bed-ridden after five month's in hospital.

In early 2014, Tam began suffering fits and was taken back to Quy Nhon Orthopedics Rehabilitation Hospital, where he remains under medical care.

Despite having a health insurance card, she has to spend an extra VND200,000 (USD9.52) for medicines. Mai is now considering selling their home to pay for ongoing treatment.

Nguyen Xuan Quyen, from the hospital, said Tam’s condition was critical and the treatment costly.

DTiNew Editor-in-chief Pham Huy Hoan initially used VND10m from the Compassionate Hearts Charity Fund to support Mai and her son. But more is needed.
