DanTri Newspaper will build a fifth sponsored bridge in the Mekong Delta region to give students in rural areas easier access to their schools.

The old bridge

The construction of the new 25-metre long, 2-metre wide bridge will start on August 28 in Phong Tan Commune, Bac Lieu Province, to replace a deteriorating old bridge which consisted of few iron and wood planks with large holes in-between.

The old bridge can only safely allow one person to cross and is extremely rickety, putting off pupils who have to use a longer route to avoid the dangerous crossing.

Deteriorating bridge

Tran Huy Hoang, vice head of Phong Tan Secondary School said lots of students have houses right across the school but have to take the long route. "We hope students will have a new bridge. It would help keep the students safe and make going to school easier."

Nguyen Chi Cong, chairman of Phong Tan Commune, said the communal budget was limited and could not afford a new bridge.

Some 45 scholarships will be given to excellent students with poor backgrounds in the area at the ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the bridge.
