Dan Tri has just transferred over VND73 million (USD3,300) donated by readers to a man from Quang Tri Province whose life has been threatened by tuberculosis.

Tuyen looks thin on hospital bed

Doan Thi Thuy, Doan Quang Tuyen's sister, said Tuyen was diagnosed with tuberculosis in June at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital. Tuyen does not have insurance so eventually his family could no longer afford the medical fees as they mounted to VND100 million.

Tuyen is the youngest of eight siblings. Tuyen's oldest brother also has tuberculosis. His four siblings borrowed VND80 million and his parents put up the house as collateral for a VND50 million loan but they have rapidly ran out of money.

Tuyen had to drop out of Danang University of Technology to treat the illness. He then continued to pursue a bachelor degree at HCM City University of Architecture. He worked hard to help his family escape poverty but then fell ill again. He lost weight quickly.

Doctors at HCM City's 175 Military Hospital had to cut 1.2 metres of necrotic intestines out after finding out that he has bowel effusion. Each day in hospital cost the family over VND4 million.

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Minh said, "We've found out that he has hepatitis and faces the danger of small bowel obstruction after surgery. He is recovering but will need long-term treatment."

After his story was published, readers have sent to the family over VND65 million.

On October 12, representatives of Dan Tri and 175 Military Hospital visited Tuyen and gave him VND73,650,000 from readers.

"I thought I would have to bring him home to die but you helped him overcome this. We want to express our gratitude to everyone," Tuyen's mother said.
