A 12 year-old girl in the northern province of Thai Nguyen now has to take care of her father who suffers from mental illness, while her mother left home.

After a high fever, father of Pham Thi Hong Hanh in Dai Tu District’s My Yen Commune suddenly began to suffer from mental illness five years ago. Earlier, he was in good health and worked very hard to support the family. A short time after that, her mother left home, leaving the family burden for the girl.

Every day, Hanh takes care of her father and younger brother

Hanh also takes care of her younger brother who is now in grade 2. The family lives in a dilapidated house without any valuables. Her father stays in bed all day and is tied with a chain to prevent him from attacking others.

After school, Hanh returns home to help her father and does farming work for her paternal grandparents who are weak and poor. She does a part-time job at a tea processing workshop near home to further support the family.

Hanh said her greatest dream is going to school and then became a university student later which she hopes will allow her to earn a good wage to support her family.
