A three-year old girl in the southern province of Ben Tre is facing a gloomy future as her mother suffers from heart disease and her father is blind.

Bui Van Hong, 23 years old, and his wife Phan Thi Tuyet Nhi, 21, are living in a charitable house in Phu Le Commune, Ba Tri District. Over recent months, the couple have had to live on their neighbour’s support.

Hong said his father died when he was at 5 years old, leaving his mother to raise the family of 6 children. He has had his eye problems since when he was 7 years old, but his family was so poor to cover the long-term treatment. One year after getting married, he became blind and since then he has had to stay at home. Doctors said that he had been facing serious conjunctivitis for many years, but not given timely treatment, so they were not sure that surgery would still help him recover.

Unfortunately, when his daughter was one year old, his wife was diagnosed with heart problems after month-long cough. Despite being sick, Nhi still has to try to work for a local cashew nut processing workshop, earning around USD1 per day. The income is too modest to cover daily expenses for medicines and a big debt.

Her health has worsened, so she can't go to work. Many relatives and neighbours have supported them, providing some food, but their small daughter is often hungry.

Nguyen Van Thuan, head of Phu Le Commune's Red Cross, said that authorities had called on local people to provide assistance, but the support is very small. He hoped that the poor couple will receive more help.
