Vietnamese people in Ukraine have donated nearly VND 101m (USD4,600) to support six orphans in Bac Giang Province and a family in Nghe An Province after reading about their stories on Dan Tri.

The oldest daughter of six siblings, Nguyen Thi Yen, is 17 years old and the youngest child is just 14 months old. Yen's mother died on February 19 in a crash with a truck near the house, while their father died 23 days later following a fever.

The death of Yen’s parents left six children and the rest of the family shell-shocked. Yen's relatives are also poor and do not know how to care for six children.

Phung Dang Duong, head of the charity group in Odessa City, said, "Even though the economic situation in Ukraine has worsened we wanted to contribute a small amount to help these disadvantaged people. We set up a VND20.9m saving account for the children to help and will encourage them to study hard."

The group also provided VND80m to the family of Tran Thieu Vuong in Nghe An Province. Vuong's parents and his three year-old sister suffered severe burns after a fire broke out in their house. Everything was burnt and Vuong has struggled to pay hospital charges with his little income as labourer.

Dr. Ngo Tuan Hung from Hanoi's Vietnam National Institute of Burns, who treats Vuong's father said, "The patient has severe burn wound infections and the treatment for him alone is eight to ten million dong a day."
