Mother calls for help to save her ill children

A mother in Quang Nam Province is desperately calling for help to treat three of her sons whose lives depend on frequent blood transfusions.

Despite poverty, Tran Thi Le and Truong Van Y had a happy family with their small sons. But in 2005, their second child was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Thalassemia at eight months old.

"Doctors said this disorder couldn't be cured and he needs frequent blood transfusion. We have to take him to hospital quickly whenever he looks too pale, lacks appetite and is tired. His condition can be improved with a bone marrow transplant but the cost is high. We are just scraping to get by even for daily meals and don't even have our own house. This house belongs to my father-in-law. So I don't know how we can help him," Le said.

Le's three sons all have blood disorder

Then in 2011, Truong Minh Chau, Le's oldest child were playing with his friends by Thu Bon River when two of is friends accidentally fell into the river. As his friends didn't know how to swim, he jumped in to save them. His friends were saved but Chau drowned.

When she had the third son in 2013, she only hoped that he would be healthy and live long. But at three months old, he was also diagnosed with Thalassemia.

Le's husband is a bricklayer with daily income of USD4.50 while she stays home to take care of two children. Le said they were still lucky that health insurances for small children and poor family covered parts of the cost or else she didn't know how to afford frequent blood transfusions.

"My youngest son also has complication such as inflated spleen so he had an operation at Paediatric Hospital 1 in HCM City," Le said.

Last year, her family welcomed another family member but he also showed similar symptoms as his two brothers at three months old.

Tran Thi Thuy, Le's neighbour said, "Sometimes, we visited her to given them encouragement. Le had thought of suicide but she lives for the children. She often cries and even the health of Le and her husband have got weaker."
