A woman in Hanoi is calling for financial support to save her husband who is dying from acute pancreatitis as the family can no longer afford the treatment.

Ngoc takes care of her husband in hospital

Tran Thi Bich Ngoc from Duoc Thuong Village said everything was normal on the day that her husband, Nguyen Van Duc suddenly fell ill. She said, "He returned home from the field and had lunch but in the afternoon, he had a severe stomach ache. When we brought him to hospital, he was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis."

Ngoc said she had borrowed from everyone she could and even sold their most valuable assets, the two buffaloes, for VND40m (USD1,800). She has nothing else and been forced to think of bringing him home.

"I just think it's better to let him have the last moment at home," she said.

Ngoc's two children, the oldest child is in 10th grade and the young one is in fifth grade, wanted to drop out to find work and support the family.

Dr. Pham The Ngoc from Bach Mai Hospital said, "His condition is worsening. One of the reasons is because his family can't afford better medicines. He has undergone three operations since being admitted two months ago and suffered from gastrointestinal tract leak."

His health insurance can't cover expensive medicines. For example, there's a bottle of antifungal drug that costs VND6m (USD272) per day. As his condition got worse, he may need dialysis in the future which will make the bill higher.

"He is still aware of his surrounding and can be saved. It's regrettable if he goes home and accepts death," Ngoc said.
