A family in Ho Chi Minh City is in need of help to treat their one-year-old son who is suffering from leukaemia.

Nguyen Duc Huy's mother, Nguyen Thi Van, said, "Our oldest son is three-years-old. Six months ago, I sent my children to a private nursery near home and found bruises on my baby boy's body. I thought he had been hit by his carer but the bruises didn't fade, so I brought him to hospital. He was diagnosed with leukaemia and transferred to HCM City Blood Transfusion and Haematology Hospital."

He often has high fever, bloated liver and spleen and bleeding under the skin.

Van is a textile worker and her husband Nguyen Chau Phuong is a company driver. However, she had to stay home to take care of their ill son so Phuong is the family's sole breadwinner. It is estimated that they would need VND400m (USD18,100) for treatments and this figure is beyond their comprehension in terms of fund-raising.

"We borrowed over VND60m (USD2,700) from banks and friends in the past months and now we can't repay the debts or take any more loans. The treatment and medicine for the first phase is nearly VND100m. We already sold anything we can think of in order to raise money for the second phase," Van said.

The cost for medicines, tests and blood cultures is nearly VND18m (USD818) a week. If the medicines covered by health insurance run out, they will have to use special medicines worth VND28m per bottle and Huy's treatment may last for two years.

"We don't even have our own house to put it up as collateral," she said.

Vo Thi Thanh, Van's co-worker, said, "When I heard about her son, I raised VND20m (USD909) from the company because her monthly wage is low. Many co-workers have helped but it is not enough."

Huy is being treated at the paediatric haematology faculty at HCM City Blood Transfusion and Haematology Hospital.
