A four-year-old girl from the Van Kieu ethnic minority group in Quang Tri Province is in desperate need of financial support as both her parents have serious illnesses.

When Ho Thi Vy's parents got married, they made a small bamboo house but it was destroyed after a storm. Since then, the family have lived with Vy's grandmother in a dilapidated house.

Vy's father, Ho Van Long, was diagnosed with liver cancer while her mother, Ho Thi Diep was diagnosed with kidney failure. They borrowed money to go to hospital and when the money ran out, they returned to the small house and struggled with their illnesses.

"Over two months ago, Long felt a sharp pain which made him unable to breathe. We borrowed some money to bring him to hospital. I don't know what his condition is now," Trinh said.

Vy is being taken care of by her grandmother, Ho Thi Trinh, as both of her parents are being treated at Quang Tri Province General Hospital. Vy's mother said, "There were nights he wouldn't wake up when I called him. I was so afraid. I'm too sick and if he leaves us like this, who will take care of our child and mother?"

Dr Do Tran Ngoc said they detected liver tumour, hepatitis and hepatic cell cancer when Vy's father was admitted to hospital. "The tumour is too big to be operated on. We don't think he’ll survive much more than three months," he said.
