A house donated by Dan Tri readers for a girl and her ill mother in Ben Tre Province was completed on February 24.

Suong receives gifts from local authorities

The 50-square-metre house costs VND45m (USD2,000) and was built for 14-year-old Nguyen Thi Diem My.

My lives with her mother Nguyen Thi Suong after her parents divorced. But last year, her mother coughed up blood and was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and a tumour in her lungs. Suong borrowed money to go to hospital but has to stay home as the money ran out.

"When My was in 7th grade, I had thought of letting her drop out of school but she insisted on going so I borrowed more money for her," Suong said.

The deteriorated house

My often gathers grass to feed their goats and takes care of her mother. An old woman living nearby supports them by hiring My and her mother VND30,000 (USD1.3) per night to sleep in her house so that they can have money for daily meals.

Their wooden house is deteriorated and can't keep out the winds. My said she only wanted her mother to be healthy again.

The new house for Suong and her daughter

After their story was published, many people visited and gave them gifts. They have received over VND120m (USD5,200) and expressed desire to spend VND45m to build a proper house. The rest will be used to treat Suong and pay for My's tuition.

"I'm so happy to have this new house. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who helped us," Suong said.

Tran Quoc Hai, chairman of Dinh Trung Commune, also thanked the donors and hoped that My and her mother would escape poverty soon.
