Around VND1.65 trillion to be raised for disadvantaged people
The Association for the Support of Vietnamese Handicapped and Orphans (ASVHO) set a target of raising at least VND1.65 trillion (US$72.6 million) in the next five years to assist people with disabilities and orphans to improve their life and integrate into the community.
The information was announced at the 5th National Congress for the 2017-2022 tenure of the ASVHO held in Hanoi on April 14.
The event saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Du Dam along with nearly 290 official delegates from 46 provinces, cities, associations, and central agencies across the country.
"After some 25 years of establishment and development, the ASVHO has made steady progress and made comprehensive contributions to caring for people with disabilities and orphans. The association has actively contributed ideas to policies related to people with disabilities and disadvantaged children, helping ensure rights for disadvantaged people. In addition, tens of millions of people have received support from activities initiated by the association," said Deputy PM Dam.
He added that thanks to the support of the ASVHO, many people with disabilities and disadvantaged children have overcome difficulties and attained outstanding achievements, setting examples for others to follow.
The Deputy PM emphasised that the ASVHO has done a great job of providing support and assistance to disadvantaged people and is beginning to pay attention to protecting the rights of people with disabilities and orphans which is a positive change.
Over the next five years, the association aims to provide vocational training and jobs for 7,000 people, offer eye surgery to at least 38,000 people, and provide surgery for rehabilitation and cardiac surgery for 5,000 people.
The association also expects to help 30,000 people with disabilities, orphans and needy households to buy health insurance, provide livelihood support for 8,000 disadvantaged people in 300 communes, and help at least 600 households escape from poverty, among others.
The ASVHO and its member organisations have so far raised total funds of more than VND2,523 billion (US$111 million) to carry out five main activities including orthopaedics and rehabilitation; cataract surgery for poor people; vocational training; providing wheelchairs and support facilities for people with disabilities; and presenting bicycles to orphans.
