Pupils lost school to landslides

Teachers and pupils in mountainous district of Tuan Giao, Dien Bien Province are in need of financial support to help build a new school after the old one was damaged in a recent storm.

Cars are unable to use the muddy road to get to the Hua Muc 1 school site, one of ten Pu Xi Primary School campuses, so the teachers either have to own a motorbike or walk by foot. Vice headmaster Lo Van Than, who has taught in mountainous areas for eight years, said, "About a month ago, a thunderstorm and heavy rain caused landslides and destroyed the school. We have to borrow villagers' houses to hold classes."

The house of Giang A Khai, a villager of Hua Muc Village, can be used at classroom for 10 pupils. There is only one light bulb and while the children study, Khai and his wife work on their fishing equipment.

Hua Muc 1 education facility has a total of 55 pupils. The communal authorities and residents have contributed a total of VND20m (USD881) to clear and level the ground of the collapsed school. It's unclear when the school can be repaired as the local authorities don't have the budget and are waiting for funds from higher authorities.

Giang A Chu, head of Hua Muc 1 Village, donated VND15m (USD661) out of VND20m to clear the gound but rebuilding the school is out of his reach. He also holds two classrooms in his house. He said, "90% of the villagers are poor. We can help with the construction. We don't even have enough for daily meals," he said. "I really feel for the children as they lack proper light and it's hot in summer."

The house for teachers is small and dilapidated. The wooden planks are put together to make up the walls with few utilities.

Even though the Hua Muc 3 facility isn't damaged by landslides, it has already deteriorated so bad that Tuan Giao District Department of Education suggested demolishing it even though they don't have funds to build a new one. They also proposed to let pupils study at residential houses.

The wooden rooms at Hua Muc 3 Nursery School are also in much need of repair and children have to sleep on the ground for their naps.
