Ten-year-old girl calls for help for her ill family
A small girl in Quang Tri Province is calling for help to treat her father who is suffering from brain tumour and her mother from lupus.
Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu is the eldest daughter of Nguyen Van Ngoi and Nguyen Thi Hoai Phuong. Nhu's grandmother is blind, her mother has lupus and her father has a brain tumour.
Nhu's father, Nguyen Van Ngoi works at a rubber plantation but after his health weakened, he can no longer work and all the family’s money is spent to pay hospital charges. "In 2010, my vision blurred and doctors at Hue Central Hospital said I had brain tumour and I needed to be operated on," Ngoi said.
Ngoi has to go through two operations to treat the brain tumour. After the money ran out, he refused to go to the hospital as frequently as before. Early this year, he had another check-up and was told that the tumour had spread and pressed on his optic nerves, causing headaches and poor vision.
"My family borrowed a huge sum of money from the neighbours to go to HCM City and buy medicines for my mother. But my mother still needs to go to hospital regularly but no one in my family can work," Nhu wrote in her letter to Dan Tri Newspaper.
Nhu and her sister also want to continue studying to become a doctor but their future is gloomy.
Nhu's mother said, "I don't know how long I can go on like this as doctors said the treatment is long and costly. My children are still so small."
Le Duong, the family's neighbour, said they tried to help and encouraged them. "I'm not sure how long can Nhu's parents hold on but we can only help them so much," he said.
