Poor girl struggles with Leukaemia
A poor couple in the northern province of Hai Duong is calling for help to treat their 9-year-old daughter who is suffering from Leukaemia.
The girl Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh is staying at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion in Hanoi for the treatment. Doctors said that she was in the critical condition and on the verge of death.
Her mother Nguyen Thi Thao, who is now in the sixth month of pregnancy, said that Anh was hospitalised after many days of high fever and was then was diagnosed with Leukaemia.
During the one-year treatment process, the family has sold out everything valuable as well as taken loans to pay the hospital fees.
Anh’s paternal grandmother is taking care of her at the hospital as her parents have to stay at home to work to earn money for the hospital fees payment. Meanwhile, Anh also has a younger sister who is just three years old.
According to Doctor Hoang Thi Hong from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion the best measure to save Anh is stem cell transplantation. After the mother gives birth, the hospital will check whether Anh’s umbilical cord blood suits her mother’s. The transplant would cost around VND500 million (USD22,700).
If the girl does not match her mother’s umbilical cord blood, she will have to use another source which brings the costs up to VND1 billion (USD45,450).
The only hope for the girl’s survival is public support.
