Nine-month-old baby fights against leukaemia
A family in Hung Yen Province is calling for financial support to help treat their small daughter who is suffering from leukaemia.
Nguyen Thi Thao's father-in-law died from rectal cancer after five years living in agony. Then four months ago, she was shocked to hear that her then five-month-old daughter, Huyen Thu, had leukaemia.
"I went crazy. I cried and held my baby and ran. I had no idea where I would run to. I'm just afraid of losing her," she said. "I saw how my father-in-law was tortured by the pain and our family borrowed everywhere to treat him to no avail."
"I never thought of leukaemia. My daughter is only a few months old. How can she have this illness? Why aren’t I the one who has it?" Thao said.
Thao's oldest daughter is four years old and has to go to work with her father as there is no one else at home. Everyone is worried that Thao's physical and mental health when she takes care of Thu alone so her mother-in-law also go to the hospital.
Nguyen Duc Kien, vice chairman of Pham Ngu Lao Commune People's Committee, said, "Thao's family is one of the difficult situations in our commune. We have tried to give them welfare benefits and asked the neighbours to contribute but we can only help them so much."
